Matt Carle Receiving Interest From St. Louis Blues, According To Report

With NHL free agency only two days old, the entire hockey world is focused upon the massive offers that have been presented to unrestricted free agents Ryan Suter and Zach Parise.

The clear cut grand prizes of the 2012 free agency class, the two players are single handedly delaying the offseason process as teams wait with baited breath to see if they are the chosen destination for the standout stars.

For players not named Parise or Suter, the waiting game has stalled their process for one of two reasons; either teams have so much money allocated to a potential deal with one (or both) of Parise and Suter that they can’t commit money to any one else prior to receiving an answer, or the player is waiting to see what happens with those two in order to drive up the asking price on his own contract.

This is the case for Matt Carle.

Considered the second best defensive option on the market behind Suter, Carle stands to make a sizeable increase in salary from the four-year, $13.75 million contract he just finished serving.

At the same time, it is believed that he wants to play in Philadelphia and will come back to the club prior to accepting a deal from any other team.

However, the Flyers can’t commit to him or submit a counter-offer at the moment because they have a contract offer into Suter that is reported to be in the range of $100 million-plus.

This has left him in a limbo of sorts.

To this point, not much has come out regarding interest in Carle besides the belief that he will become highly in-demand after Suter signs.

With that being said, a report surfaced on Monday linking the St. Louis Blues as a team that has their sights set on the 27-year old defenseman.

Via St. Louis Today:

The Blues have a hole on the left side of their defense and they are trying to fill it via free agency. General manager Doug Armstrong said that the club reached out to several free agents on Sunday, expressing interest.

Armstrong would not confirm whether the team made contact with Ryan Suter's camp, but the Blues aren't believed to be in the mix anyway. But they did send feelers out to Florida's Jason Garrison and Philadelphia's Matt Carle.

Carle, 27, might be a higher priority for the Blues anyway. He had 38 points with Philadelphia last season and has 113 points over the last three years with the Flyers. In 2010-11, he had 39 assists and was a plus-30.

With Jason Garrison already off the market following his deal with the Vancouver Canucks, it can be guaranteed that once Suter decides where he wants to play the Blues won’t be the only team interested in pursuing Carle.
