Flyers Will Face Devils In Semifinals Matchup

It took seven games and two overtimes, but the Philadelphia Flyers opponent in the Eastern Conference Semifinals has finally been decided.

Following Adam Henrique’s goal 3:47 into the second overtime, the New Jersey Devils officially punched their ticket to the second round of the playoffs. The goal was Henrique’s second of the game and cemented the final score at 3-2.

For the Flyers, this will now mark the sixth time that they will face the Devils franchise in the postseason. The last time the two teams met was in 2010 when the seventh seeded Flyers upset the second seeded Devils in five games.

Philadelphia ultimately made it to the Stanley Cup Final that year and will hope to do the same this year.

The Flyers have won the last two playoff meetings between the two teams both of which were in the Quarterfinals (2004, 2010), while the Devils won the two prior to that, both of which came in the Conference Final (1995, 2000).

The first playoff meeting between the two franchises came in 1978 when the Devils were located in Colorado and went by the Rockies. The Flyers swept the series in two games.

For Philadelphia, this will mark the second straight series that will come against an Atlantic Division opponent after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round in six games.

The Flyers posted a 3-2-1 record in the season series between the two teams.

However, Philadelphia’s starting goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has a 3-0-0 record against the Devils this season and recorded two 3-0 shutouts against the team.

Devils’ goaltender Martin Brodeur has struggled against the Flyers this season; he is 1-3-0 with a .905 save percentage and a 2.26 goals against average.

The simple fact of finding out that the Flyers and Devils would be facing each other put me to sleep. Is it just me or is this the worst possible match-up that could happen, in terms of entertainment value? I would have loved to see the Flyers and Panthers try to team each other's heads off. The only better match up would have been Flyers and Sens.
