Bryz hurt? Seen walking with a limp
Following the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Dave Isaac reported that Ilya Bryzgalov appeared to be walking with a noticeable limp.
A few minutes later, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Bryzgalov underwent an x-ray following the game and that team general manager Paul Holmgren addressed the issue by saying that Bryzgalov was not injured.
Of course, that has been said before.
As of Monday night, that was all the information that was available.
It did appear that he may have tweaked something during the Flyers warm-ups.
Bryzgalov blocked a shot with his glove hand and then brought his leg up in pain and began swinging it back-and-forth as if trying to loosen up his knee.
He gingerly skated over to the Flyers bench, talked to a trainer and then slowly skated to the other side of the rink, down to the faceoff circle then back over to the bench.
From there, he returned to the cage and proceeded to take shots with out any problem.
Even during the game, Bryzgalov didn’t appear to be injured.
The one point that some have astutely made is the fact that he wasn’t as active as he has been in challenging shooters by coming out of the goal.
Bryzgalov has largely been the Flyers best player since the start of March.
He has a record of 10-2-1, four shutouts and won the NHL’s first star in consecutive weeks in that span.
An extended absence or serious injury to Bryzgalov could prove to be catastrophic for the surging Flyers.
While there is little information right now, it was reported by Carchidi that Bryzgalov will at least miss the team’s next game against the Toronto Maple Leafs as Holmgren informed him that Sergei Bobrovsky was going to get the call.
It was not specified as to whether the move is due to injury or not.
UPDATE: On Tuesday afternoon, the Flyers announced on Twitter that an MRI revealed Bryzgalov has a chip fracture in his left foot and will not play in Thursday's game. He is day-to-day and his return date is unknown.
In additional injury news, Frank Seravalli of the Daily News is reporting that the Flyers announced an "upper-body injury" for Kimmo Timonen. He is day-to-day.
