Trenton Titans Recap: 10-23-2011
On Sunday October, 23, the Trenton Titans, ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers hosted the Cincinnati Cyclones at Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.
Both teams had some quality scoring chances in the first period, with ten shots apiece. An early goal by Joe Devin and some great saves by goalie Chet Pickard of the Cyclones sent the Titans into the first intermission trailing, 1-0.
The Titans fell apart in the second period. Cincinnati controlled the puck for the majority of the period, outshooting the Titans 13-1. Trenton spent 6 minutes of the period on the penalty kill. During the second, Trenton's goalie Brad Phillips made some amazing saves and kept the Titans deficit at one goal.
Both teams played well offensively in the third period. Trenton had several scoring chances to tie the game, but it was the Cyclones who would score late in the period to take a 2-0 lead. Cincinnati added an empty net goal in the final minute for a final score of 3-0.
-Brad Phillips was very solid. He spent parts of last season up in the AHL, and probably should be in the AHL except that Leighton, Bacashihua and Backlund have the AHL goaltending spots locked up.
-Randy Rowe of the Titans is very similar to Danny Briere. Both are shifty, smaller forwards who have a knack for offense and taking stick fouls. Rowe had 8 PIMs in the loss for taking 4 minor penalties for stick fouls.
-Mitch Versteeg can handle the puck on the blue line. Versteeg made solid passes and seemed to be one of the Titans who could generate scoring chances just by touching the puck.
