K-Wings Fly Right Past Trenton
The Titans performance inside would mirror the ugly weather outside.
Through snow, ice, sleet and hail, 4,866 fans packed the Sun National Back Center in Trenton to see the Titans (13-19-3-3-32) play host to the Kalamazoo Wings (22-14-1-2-47).
Trenton’s first problem would come just 14 seconds after the opening faceoff as defenseman Ray DiLauro would be hit with a delay of game penalty. Things wouldn’t get better as just five minutes later; K-Wings center Kory Karlander would start the onslaught beating Dave Caruso of Trenton.
A minute later, Darryl Bootland would beat Caruso to give the K-Wings a 2-0 lead which they would hold into the first intermission.
Caruso’s struggles would continue in the second period.
Justin Taylor would score the first of his two goals of the evening just 1:38 into the second frame. At the 3:18 mark of the period, Titans forward Andy Bohmbach would take a slashing call, and right off the ensuing faceoff K-Wings defenseman Mike Matczak would blast a heavy shot past Caruso to make the lead 4-0.
Later in the period, Nick Sirota would become the fifth K-Wing to tally a goal as he slipped a shot past Caruso.
Caruso’s struggles mirrored many of his weak early season performances when rebound control was a major problem.
For the third period, Caruso found himself on the bench and Brad Phillips found himself between the pipes. This change in goal gave the Titans a bit of momentum as Captain Randy Rowe would break the shutout 58 seconds into the period.
This change didn’t last long as Taylor would beat Phillips to make the score 6-1 at the 5:46 mark of the third.
At the 8:58 Prab Rai would be assessed a boarding major for hitting a Titans player on the near side wall. The Titans would get nothing in terms of goals on the five minute man advantage, but it was still an eventful powerplay.
At the 11:12 mark of the period, tempers would explode. Nick Sirota of the K-wings would be given an elbowing minor for catching Trenton RW Steve Silva with a blindside hit. Dustin Cameron of the Titans would jump to the aid of his teammate and ended up tangling with defenseman Harry Young of the K-Wings in a fight.
Silva would pop back up to his feet and drop the gloves with Sirota. At the end of the mini-brawl, Cameron and Sirota would be both assessed majors and game misconducts wile Sirota and Silva would each be given a fighting major and an extra minor.
With less than four minutes left, Ryan Hayes would score his 11th goal of the season, giving him a team leading 28 points so far.
The Titans have now lost three games in a row.
Notes and Observations
The ECHL tends to take the secondary altercation penalty in line brawls seriously, as such, it’s possible Dustin Cameron and Harry Young may each get one game suspensions.
New Titans defenseman Vinny Geonnetti started his Titans career off on the wrong foot as well with a kneeing penalty in the second period when he slewfooted a K-Wings forward.
With the Flyers losing Danny Briere, Zac Rinaldo and Jaromir Jagr to injury today and recalling Ben Holmstrom and Tom Sestito from the Phantoms, it’s possible that Andy Bohmbach will be headed back to the AHL to fill the void up there.
