Sluggish Flyers Squeeze By Last Place Devils 2-1
The Philadelphia Flyers came into today's back end of a home and home with the Devils needing a point or a Penguins loss for coach Laviolette to be a coach of one of the All-Star teams at the end of the month.
The Flyers would do just that today beating the Devils 2-1. With that win Laviolette will coach along with Alain Vignault against Joel Quenneville and a coach yet TBD in Carolina, a familiar territory for Laviolette. He Spent parts of five seasons as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes going 167-122-34 record and winning a Stanley Cup in 2006.
The first period would turn out to their best period today, which isn't saying much, when they scored first on a goal by JVR at 8:13.
JVR would carry the puck the whole way up the ice slant in on the forehand and beat Hedberg through the five hole giving the Flyers the first goal of the game. JVR played a strong game and has seemed to figure out how to use his speed and body this season.
Just six and a half minutes later the Flyers would strike again this time on the power play when Claude Giroux made a nice pass to Danny Briere who was at the side of the net, he controlled the puck and fired it short side high off Hedberg's shoulder and into the top corner of the net, making it 2-0 Flyers.
This would prove to be the Flyers only powerplay goal today, they were 1-5 with the man advantage. That goal would end the day for Hedberg and Brodeur would take over. This was a good move for the Devils and Brodeur as he would stop all 19 shots thrown at him and could point him in the right direction in finding his game.
It would also be the only period in which the Flyers offense find the back of the net. They would finish the first period leading the Devils 2-0. In the second period it seemed the Flyers dropped it down a gear and were not getting to loose pucks first.
That was evident on their powerplay as it seemed to be out of sync today, especially when they were dumping the puck in and there were no Flyers there to get it. Don't know if it was lack of communication today or lack of desire.Back to the game.
The Devils would get on the board in this period at 8:07 when Greene shot the puck that deflected off Leino's stick blade and flipped up in the air over Boucher's shoulder making it 2-1 Flyers. There would be only three penalties the second period, the Flyers also would get out shot by the Devils this period 12-8.
The third period would see no goals but plenty of pressure on Boucher especially at the end of the game. Boosh and the Flyers would hold onto the one goal lead giving them a one point lead over the Penguins in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Flyers will travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres on January 11th, look for my preview on game day.
