Red Hot Flyers Sear Senators
He is the hottest Flyer right now notching two goals on Saturday night and two tonight, one of which was short handed. He also had an assist on Claude Giroux's third period power play goal to give him his 300 NHL point.
That assist was a flubbed pass intended for Kimo Timmonen but Giroux having his stick on the ice and ready quickly turned a shot on net that beat Elliott.
Danny Briere opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the first period by deflecting Meszaros point shot passed Elliott . Meszaros is still looking for his first goal as a Flyer. Sean O'Donnell also picked up an assist on that goal and set up to other scoring chances in the first period.
Just under two minutes later Jason Spezza beat Bobrovsky five hole from a poor angle to tie the game at one. Even though he would like to have that one back, it would be the only mistake Bobrovsky would make on the night.
Again the Flyers would come right back and score off a Timonen point shot. Darrol Powe deflected the shot down, bounced off the ice up and over Elliott's shoulder. The Flyers would go into the first intermission leading 2-1.
The second period would only see one goal, a power play goal from Claude Giroux assisted by Richards and Pronger. This put the Flyers up 3-1 going into the last period.
The Flyers did suffer a set back in the second as Daniel Carcillo injured his knee and will be out for at least two weeks. Andreas Nodl, if healthy, should be in the lineup tonight against the Candiens.
The third period belonged to Mike Richards as he scored two goals 1:30 apart. The first being a short handed break away goal in which he beat Elliott up high to the glove side with a nice back hand move. The second came off a shot wide by Coburn in which Richards snapped a shot in the top corner .
Richards started off the season slow with just one goal in the first twelve games. He has netted five goals in the last three games and has a total of seven goals and nineteen points on the season. Sergei Bobrovsky making his tenth consecutive start finished the game with 28 saves.
There is not much to say about this team right now, except can they play like this on a consistent basis ? That is a question that only time will tell, so sit back and enjoy the show.
But if I had to pick one area to criticize tonight it would their play with the man advantage. They had five power play chances including back to back power plays they wasted when Karlsson took consecutive hooking penalties. The game was close at the time and momentum was up for grabs.
JVR looked a lot better, he looked aggressive and seemed to use his speed and body more tonight. He still needs to find his confidence, he seemed to be unsure of himself at times. Hopefully he finds it soon as it looks like he will be in the lineup for a little while now with the Carcillo knee injury.
The Flyers will travel to Montreal to take on the Habs tonight, look for the preview.
