Game Preview: Hurricane Watch In Philly

Tonight the Flyers (6-4-1) take on the Carolina Hurricanes (5-5-0) at the Wells Fargo Center in what is the first of four meetings between these teams this season.

The Flyers are coming off back to back wins against Pittsburgh and the Islanders respectively putting them in a tie for first place with the Pens. In the game against the Isles the Flyers finally received scoring from their defensive corps in the way of 3 goals.

Two power play goals from Chris Pronger and the first goal of the game by Kimmo Timonen. The Flyers were the last team in the NHL to get a goal from their defense.

The Hurricanes are coming into Philly 1-2 in their last three.Their two losses were shutouts by the Capitals and Pittsburgh, the win came against the Rangers by the score of 4-3. The Hurricanes will be glad to get back on the road where they are 5-3 and have a home record of 0-2.

Matchup
The Flyers are 30-11-7 overall against the Canes and are 15-6-3 against them on their home ice. They are 12-0-3 in the last 15 meetings against the canes and in the last 21 they have gone into OT 15 times.

Last season the Flyers won all four meetings against the Canes, one was a shelling against Michael Leighton.

In The Nets
Probable Starters:

The Flyers will look again in the direction of Sergei Bobrovsky (5-2) 2.45GAA .917 SV%.
He is 3-0 in his last three starts and is coming off of a 30 save performance against the Isles where the only goal he surrendered was on a penalty shot.

Cam Ward (5-4) 2.75 GAA .923 SV% would be the obvious starter here since Justin Peters (0-1) 4.07 GAA .853 SV% has only had one start this season. If the coach was smart maybe he would start Peters as the Flyers usually struggle against the unknown goalie.

On The Lookout
Well, one person that you definitely won't see on the ice tonight is Danny Briere. He has been suspended for 3 games for his high stick/crosscheck to the head of Frans Nielsen. Briere has been suspended in the past so he is a repeat offender.

Three games seems a little much but with the new head shot rules you never know what the offender will get these days.

Looks like the Flyers have called up Eric Wellwood and he will be skating with JVR and Mike Richards. Also looks like Zherdev will be back in the lineup tonight.Hopefully his two healthy scratches will wake him up and get his game going, that's if he is not stuck on the fourth line.

Oskars Bartulis has been called up from the AHL in case Meszaros can't go tonight, he may not play for precautionary reasons. Nodl also looks like he will be out tonight with the current additions to tonight's lineup.

On the Carolina side keep an eye on Jeff Skinner as he has been hot lately and had two goals and an assist in his last three games. He is also tied with Jarrod Staal for the team lead in points with seven.Erik Cole is leading the Canes with a plus -6 rating .

Larry's Logic
The Flyers will look to keep their winning ways going tonight and will have to do that without their leading scorer Danny Briere who has been suspended for three games as mentioned above.

For a team who has had trouble at times scoring this year there will be a chance for some on this team who have been ghostly this season (JVR,Zherdev,Carle) to contribute offensively.

Dan Carcillo is only effective when playing enough minutes to contribute by being a pest out on the ice. The last two games he has done that, contributing a goal and two fights in the last two Flyers games.

The Flyers also need to keep the success of the power play going without Briere. Will Zherdev get an opportunity tonight on the power play ?

Briere out for 3 games and we're 12-0-3 against the Canes in the last 15! Bob looks so good and I loved the defensive scoring. Pronger was putting lasers into the upper corners. I'm glad to see Zherdev back in, I believe in that guy, he's got so much promise. Let's keep that PP going.

As far as the suspension goes; I think he should be glad that it's only 3 games. My view is this; look at it from an outside perspective. The Flyers fan in you may cry foul, but as a fan, it's well warranted. Remove the names and logos from the jerseys. Just two nameless, faceless players. Player A crosschecked Player B in the head at a face-off. That should be at least one game regardless of injury or not; the intent to hit B was obviously there.

Now factor in the fact that Player A is a "repeat offender". Boom, 2 games tacked on. Thankfully, in this case, there were no injuries. Except maybe a bit of short people pride. Hopefully Danny has learned his lesson and this issue doesn't arise again.
