Game Day: Streaking Through The Isles

The Philadelphia Flyers (8-4-10) look to extend their winning streak to six as they travel to Long Island tonight to face the (4-7-2) New York Islanders.

The Flyers are coming off of a commanding 4-1 win Thursday night against the New York Rangers.Claude Giroux had another strong game and made an awesome no look cross crease pass to Richards for a power play goal. Coming into tonight the Flyers are 2-1-1 on the road so far this season.

The Islanders are coming off of a 4-1 defeat to the Ottawa Senators and have lost their last six games. They have been out scored 29-11 in that stretch and 17-4 in their last three.

The Flyers have an overall winning record versus the Isles of 115-88-26 and a losing road record in Long Island of 46-55-15. In their last 21 meetings the Flyers are 19-2-0. The last time these two teams met was last weekend, the Flyers dominated that game from the start resulting in a 6-1 romping.

There could be some more fireworks tonight stemming from the game in Philly which saw the teams combine for 120 penalty minutes, six ten minute misconducts and a triple roughing minor to Trevor Gillies.

Don't forget the antics of Rick DiPietro and his two leaving the crease penalties. Along with all that drama was a six goal offensive explosion which included two power play goals from Chris Pronger.

Trading Places

Despite the long history between these two teams there have only been trade partners eleven times. One of the more familiar names traded to the Flyers in 1994 was Ron Hextall.

The Islanders sent Hextall and a 5th round draft pick to Philly for goaltender Tommy Soderstrom. This would be Ron Hextall's second stint with the Flyers and would finish his career out with the Flyers in 1999.

The fith round pick the Flyers received in that trade turned out to be Demitri Tertyshny. He was a promising defensemen who just seemed to be fitting in on the Flyers Defense when he was killed in a tragic boating accident. His wife was four months pregnant at the time of his death.

Flying Fists

You may see a rematch between #13 Dan Carcillo of the Flyers and #28 Zenon Konopka, they are two feisty players and will be looking for each other. Of course the Flyers have #45 Jody Shelley to take on any willing combatants.

On The Lookout

Claude Giroux has not only been hot lately he has also been very entertaining while contributing to the stat sheet. He has four goals and five assists during this five game winning streak.Three of those four goals came on the power play.

Giroux has seven career goals against the Isles three power play goals, three short handed goals and one at even strength.

Sergei Bobrovsky has been really good and may get a rest tonight in favor of Boucher as tonights game is the first of a back to back this weekend. The Flyers take on the Capitals in Washington D.C. tomorrow at 5pm, where they would probably prefer to go with Bobrovsky in net.

Watch the progression of Eric Wellwood during his time up with the Flyers, it's possible he could stay longer than expected if he keeps of his strong play.

The Flyers power play has been good and they have scored a power play goal in all five games of this current winning streak.

The Islanders are going to come out hard after being embarrassed in Philly last weekend. Look for the rough stuff and for the Isles to lure the Flyers into taking dumb penalties. Pay attention to #91 John Tavares, as always he seems to step it up against the Flyers.

Larry's Logic

The Flyers should know what to expect tonight after the way the last game ended. So they should be on top of their game playing alert and with their heads up.

The Isles will come out hard as they have been on a downward slide since the loss in Philly. They will try to make the Flyers pay physically for that. The Flyers have to maintain their discipline early and stick to the coach's game plan.

They need put the pressure on the Isles early and dictate the play, the Flyers need to score first tonight. The Flyers will have to try not to give the isles too many power plays and have to keep their own power play success rolling.

The defense will have to play tight like they did against the Rangers. They have been blocking shots and forcing shots from outside, that will need to continue tonight.

Sin Bin

Dan Carcillo will not be suspended for the hit on Ruslan Fedotenko. It was close and questionable but because he is who he is it was surprising he didn't get anything.

Danny Briere will serve his last game of his three game suspension tonight. He was suspended for cross checking to the head of Isles Frans Nielsen during a late face off in last weekends Flyers 6-1 win over the Isles.

Step Up Players

Carter, Timonen, JVR

As every game goes by, Giroux continues to add to his elite status. That pass he had to Richards against the Rangers was so awesome I just sat there with my mouth open for a while. To even know Richards was there through all that traffic and that far away takes Gretzky ice awareness. I'm glad JVR is having a seat, you gotta earn that spot. Bob still looking spectacular. I still like Zherdev's play although he needs to put it in the net.

I coulda killed Wellwood when he missed that empty netter! They got the win and the streak is alive.
