Game Day Preview: Flyers Vs. Kings

The Philadelphia Flyers (3-0-0) enter this evening's game against the Los Angeles Kings (1-1-1) one of only five undefeated teams left in the league. The Kings are coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils, a game in which both regulation goals were scored in the first period.

The Flyers are coming off an undisciplined game against the Vancouver Canucks which saw them take bad, untimely penalties along with committing 12 turnovers. That will have to change if this team wants to have a chance to stay undefeated.

Mike Richards returns to the Wells Fargo Center tonight for the first time since being traded in the offseason. He brings with him one goal and one assist with a +/- of -3.  Along for the ride is Simon Gagne. Gagne will also face the Flyers for the first time as an L.A. King.

What type of reception will he receive from his former hometown crowd? There is supposed to be a thank you video played on the jumbotron before the game, which could play into the crowd reaction. He will probably get cheered when announced the first time but could get booed after especially if he scores.

Matchup

Tonight's matchup will be the only time these two teams will meet this season. The last time these teams met was on February 13th in Philly, a game the Flyers lost 1-0 with Jonathan Quick picking up the shutout.

The Flyers are 82-38-15 versus the L.A. Kings overall and 42-16-7 on home ice. The Flyers have shut out the Kings 18 times in their history with the latest one coming on February 25, 2009 by Martin Biron.

Anze Kopitar leads the Kings in points with five 3 goals and 2 assists , followed by Justin Williams (#14)with three, all assists. Simon Gagne (#12), Mike Richards (#10) and Jack Johnson (#3) are close behind with two, all three with one goal and one assist.

Claude Giroux (#28) is hot right now and leads the Flyers with five points, with three goals and two assist. He is followed by two defensemen, Chris Pronger (#20) with four points (1g, 3 a) and Andrej Meszaros (#41) with three points (1g, 2a).

Five players who have played in the first three games are without a point; Lilja (#6), Talbot (#27), Coburn (#5), Nodl (#15), and Rinaldo (#36).

Terry Murray is a defensive minded coach so expect the Flyers to have to work hard for their opportunities tonight.

In the Nets

Ilya Bryzgalov , 3-0 with a 1.67 GAA .940 SV% and one shutout. He has been steady in the nets so far for the Flyers this season controlling his rebounds and bailing out the team when they have a defensive break down.

Jonathan Quick 1-0-1 with a 1.40 GAA and a .952 GAA. He has faced 63 shots in his two starts. With Jonathan Quick having a good start to the season the Flyers may struggle to find the back of the net tonight.

Larry's logic

The Flyers are still raw in some areas of their game. They have to execute better defensive coverage in their own zone tonight as they were burned too many times for blown coverage in the Vancouver game. Some of the players need to be aware of the game situations and play smarter hockey with the puck or without.

Flyers Trivia

October 14th 1979 marked the beginning of the Flyers 35 game unbeaten streak. During that streak the Flyers faced all NHL teams but one, name that team.

That's The Fact, Jack

During the 35 game unbeaten streak Paul Holmgren had three game winning goals. Reggie Leach and Rick MacLeish led the team with six each.

Both L.A. Kings starting goaltender and backup have the same first name Jonathan. Quick and Bernier

Should be a great one Larry. I think LA wins in OT, Dustin Brown the star of the game and Richards with an assist. Also, be sure to check out tonight's live blog during the game! http://thecheckingline.com/liveblogs

Flyers better win, or else. Or else what? Exactly. But seriously, i really would appreciate it if Philly pulled out a regulation win tonight.

L.A. has had a hectic couple of weeks with starting their season in Europe and what not. Hopefully theres not much tread left on those tires and the Flyers send the Kings back to L.A. proper like.

I hear that Matt, We know there not going to win every game so until they lose one I wonder if the next game is that game. Cool

Gonna be a battle. I have Flyers winning 3-2, Giroux stays hot and Richards stays off the score sheet.
