Game Day Preview: Flyers / Sabres

The Philadelphia Flyers (26-10-5) will head to Buffalo tonight to face the Buffalo Sabres (18-18-5) at HSBC Arena.

The Flyers are coming off a 2-1 win versus the NJ Devils on Saturday afternoon, a game in which the Flyers looked disinterested in. Look for a better effort from the Flyers tonight in Buffalo.

The Sabres are coming off a 2-1 OT win versus the Coyotes on a goal by Drew Stafford 3:12 in to the overtime period.

This is the second of four meetings between these two teams this season. The first matchup was taken by the Flyers on Oct. 26th 6-3 in Philly. The Flyers are 72-59-20 overall versus the Sabres and 28-37-8 in Buffalo.

The last time the Flyers won a game in Buffalo was Nov 6 2009, by the score of 5-2. The Flyers are currently third in the league in points behind Vancouver and Detroit while the Sabres show up at the 23rd spot out.

The Flyers are also third behind Vancouver and Detroit in Goals for per game with 3.32 and the Sabres are 18th with 2.66 goals per game. As for playing with the man advantage both teams are closely matched with the Flyers scoring at a 16.8% clip and the Sabres slightly better with 16.9%.
Buffalo is much better on the penalty kill and is killing them at an 82.9% clip while the Flyers are killing them off at an 82.1% clip.

The Flyers Danny Briere has been hot lately netting three goals in his last two games to give him 21 on the season. For the Sabres Thomas Vanek has had the hot hand riding a four game point streak in which he has three goals and three assists.

In The Nets

Sergei Bobrovsky will see his first action in a while tonight when he gets the start against the Buffalo Sabres. He is 15-6-3 with a 2.57 GAA and a .915 SV%. His last start was a loss on New Years Eve to the Ducks where he surrendered five goals.

The Sabres will go with Ryan Miller as usual. He is 16-12-4 with a 2.62 GAA and a .913 SV%.

History 101

35 years ago today Ed Van Impe delivered the shot heard around the hockey world when he leveled Valeri Kharlamov who had turned to receive a pass. This caused the Soviet red Army team to leave the ice. For one day the whole hockey world was a Flyers fan as they battled the Russians. Here is a good story on the game.

Larry's Logic

The Flyers need to redeem themselves tonight and put forth a better effort than they did on Saturday versus the last place Devils. It is getting to that time of the year where the Flyers will have to win the games they are supposed to and any let down would be unacceptable.

They will also have to show up every night from now on as they are considered an elite team and need to put forth great efforts night in and night out as teams are gunning for them. This is where the Flyers leaders in the locker room need to step up and guide this team the rest of the way.

Tonight Bob gets a chance to redeem himself also after coming off his five goal game performance. He needs to get back to form if the Flyers are to be in a better position at the goalie position entering this year's playoffs.

Let me ask you this, How would you feel if Bob is playing the way his right now and Boosh is the same or a little worse going into the playoffs ? What needs to happen for the Flyers to have a successful playoff run would be if Bob got hot at the end of the season as he was in the beginning and ride him through. This is still an area with a lot of questions and whether or not this gets resolved before the deadline is something Holmgren sure is thinking about.

1\2 way through and down 2-1. I remember the first game between these 2, we looked really good. I think Buffalo scored 2 goals in the last 5 mins to make it look a little more respectable. From your stat it really looks like home ice makes a big difference. I'll check to see if there's a Valeri Kharlamov video somewhere of that hit. Good to see Bob back in.
