Game Day Flyers / Devils

Today the Philadelphia Flyers (15-6-3) will travel north on the New Jersey turnpike to face the New Jersey Devils (7-14-2) at the Prudential Center in Newark.

The Flyers are fresh off a 3-2 overtime shootout loss against the Calgary Flames yesterday afternoon. It appeared as though the Flyers had won the game in overtime on a power play goal by Mike Richards, but the goal was waived off for an unsportsman like conduct minor to Pronger.

He was in front screening took his hand off the stick as if he was pointing in the corner, five seconds later the puck is in the net and the goal is waived off. It was not even close to what Sean Avery did to Brodeur which prompted this new rule.

Either way the Flyers would not have been in that position if they would have played the way they are capable of. If you missed the game or want to read a recap of the Flyers Flames game yesterday, here it is.

The New Jersey Devils enter today's game off a 2-0 shutout loss to a very bad NY Islanders team snapping their first two game winning streak of the season and extended NJ's road losing streak to four. The Devils have been shutout four times this season after only being shutout six time all last season.

Matchup

The Flyers have an overall losing record against the NJ Devils 70-84-15 and a road losing record of 25-53-6. The last time these teams met was in the first round of the playoffs last year in which the Flyers disposed of the Devils in five games.

The last time these two teams met in the regular season was on March 28, 2010 a game the Flyers won 5-1. The last time they played in NJ was February 10, 2010 which the Flyers won 3-2.

The last time the Devils beat the Flyers was on December 12, 2009 by the score of 4-1. The Flyers took five of six matchups from the Devils last year, in those five wins the Flyers outscored the Devils 19-9.

Today In Flyers History

This will be the 18th time the Flyers have played on this date, they have a record of 10-7. The Flyers and Devils have never met on this date before today.

There have been two shutouts on this day in Flyers history and they were both against the LA Kings. On November 27, 1977 Wayne Stephenson picked up his 10th career shutout as the Flyers won the game 2-0. The other shutout was from Pelle Lindbergh, on this date in 1982 Lindbergh would pick up his first career shutout as the Flyers beat the Kings 4-0.

There was one hat trick recorded on this date in 1974 by Reggie Leach in a game where he scored half the Flyers goals as they beat Detroit 6-2.

Larry's logic

After losing to the Flames yesterday the Flyers are now 13-1 when they have the lead going into the third period. The Flyers will look to bounce back from that tough loss yesterday afternoon, they will have to take it to the Devils early.

The Flyers need to get that power play clicking, it would be nice to see Zherdev get some time on the power play today. The Devils are 13th in the league while on the penalty kill, they have an 82.3% kill rate compared to the Flyers who are successfully killing off power plays at an 83.9% clip, just one percentage point better than NJ.

One piece of the Devils penalty kill they will be without today is Martin Brodeur, he is out with a sore elbow. That will mean the Flyers will face former 9th round draft pick from the 1994 entry draft Johan Hedberg.

He never would play for the Flyers as he spent a few more seasons playing in Sweden, the Flyers would eventually trade him to the San Jose Sharks in 1998.

The Flyers are mum again this morning on who will be in the net today. Starting Bobrovsky today would not be a stretch as he has played back to backs this season and the Flyers don't play again until Wednesday. It would also give him a chance to rebound from the shootout loss yesterday as he did not look happy skating off the ice.

The Flyers will need to fight through the Devils boring style of play and try to keep the offensive pressure consistent. Andreas Nodl has been on a roll lately recording five goals and 4 assists for nine points in his last eleven games. He aslo picked up his first career two point night against Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night.

The Flyers are best in the league with sis shorthanded goals, three by Claudes Giroux, two by Mike Richards and just most recently one by Andreas Nodl.

The Devils have had a hot rookie as of late, Mattias Tedenby has recorded two goals and two assists for four points in his last five games. Patrik Elias leads this team in points with 14 followed closely by Jason Arnott with 12, Arnott leads the team in goal scoring with eight.

New Jersey is second to last in the league in power play success percentage at 10 compared to the Flyers who are 16th with a 16.5% success rate. Look for the Flyers to try to capitalize on the Devils bad power play and add another shorthanded goal or two.
