Game Day: Flyers @ Capitals

The Philadelphia Flyers (12-6-2) are heading to Washington D.C. for a game with the Washington Capitals (14-5-1).

The Flyers are coming off back to back losses for the first time since mid October, where they lost three in a row to Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Anaheim respectively.

Thursday night's 8-7 loss to Tamp saw the Flyers surrender two goal leads three times and in Flyers history it was the most goals scored by a Flyers team in a loss. The Flyers and Bolts combined for nine goals, the most in a first period in the NHL in 18 years.

The Washington Capitals are coming off a 5-0 shutout they suffered at the hands the Atlanta Thrashers last night. It was the first time the Caps have been shout out since Dec. 9 2009 against the Sabres.

Matchup

This will be the second of four meetings between these two teams this season. On Nov 7the Caps took the first meeting 3-2 on a Mike Green over time goal.

This matchup tonight will feature the two top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers lead the NHL in goals with 70 followed closely by the Caps with 69. The Capitals lead the NHL in points with 29, the Flyers are tied for second with Detroit with 26 points.

The Caps have had a potent power play unit as of late, entering last night's game the Caps had scored six goals on the PP in their last nine games going 8-0-1 in that stretch. They went 0-3 on the PP during last night's loss to the Thrashers.

The Flyers on the other hand have been pretty bad as of late going a combined 0-15 with the man advantage against Montreal and Tampa Bay.

In The Nets
Probable Starters:

The Flyers will go with Sergei Bobrovsky (11-3-1) 2.29 GAA .925 SV% against the Capitals tonight. He did not look good in Thursday night's loss to the Bolts. He did not look like himself, that being said he still gives the Flyers the best chance of winning on any night.

The Capitals will go with Michael Neuvirth who is 8-1-0 with a 2.82 GAA at home this season. He has never faced the Flyers, this is bad news for the Flyers as they always seem to struggle against goalies they face for the first time.

Fire And Ice

The Flyers Mike Richards has been consitent as of late gathering a point in ten of the last twelve games grabbing seven goals and eight assists in that span. Claude Giroux will look to get back on track after being pointless in the last two games.

Richards and Giroux lead the Flyers in points wit 21 followed by Carter and Leino with 16. Danny Briere and Claude Giroux are tied for first on the team in goals with ten.

The Capitals Alexander Semin has been hot as of late but had his nine game point streak snapped on Friday, notching nine goals and six assists in that span. Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin are tied for first in points on the Caps with 25.

Ovechkin has 33 career points in 20 games against the Flyers and is currently on a six game point streak against the Flyers, netting seven goals and five assists during that streak. Nicklas Backstrom is second in points with 21 followed by Brooks Laich and Mike Green with 13.

Larry's Logic

The Flyers have to play more disciplined tonight and cannot give the Caps the power play opportunities they gave up recently.

The caps have the scorers and the depth to put the Flyers away quickly if given the man advantage too often. The Flyers need to turn their own power play around, in their eight losses this season the Flyers are 1-33on the Power Play.

Stats Changed

Some scoring changes from the Tampa game. Jeff Carter was credited with the 3rd goal from O'Donnell and JVR. Braydon Coburn was credited for the 4th goal after it was initially given to Hartnell.

Just read that Boosh will be in net tonight for the Flyers if so he will replace Bob in the "Step Up Players" list. Definitely liked the Flyers chances tonight better with Bob , even if he is "tired". I ,ma not a big Boosh fan but he hasn't started in a long while and noe to be thrown to the wolves against the Caps. Hope he can keep us in it tonight. Stare
