Flyers Win a Wild One in Minny

Coming into tonight's game the Flyers were number one in the league in goals for and tonight they did not disappoint throwing up a six pack against the Wild.

The game started off with a fight between Jody Shelley and Matt Kassian just 1:45 seconds into the game. They would battle to what looked like a draw.

It is getting more and more difficult to judge these fights as the fighters are using the hand holding the opposing players jersey collar to throw some pretty good jabs. You be the Judge.

The Flyers would get on the board first 3:16 seconds into the game on a goal by James van Riemsdyk who has two goals in his last two games. The goal was made possible on a nice hustle play by Nodl, Coburn threw a shot on goal and JVR was on the porch jabbing away at the puck which was out of camera sight.

Just over two minutes later Jeff Carter scored on a wrist shot from the slot to give the Flyers a two goal lead. The second period which had been a bad period for shots against for the Wild turned out not to be so bad as the Flyers only managed to muster up 12 shots on goal. I say "only" because in their last two games the Wild have given up a total of 35 shots in the second period.

The Wild would strike first 14:49 seconds into the second newly re-acquired Patrick O'Sullivan threw a pass across the crease looking for the open man on that side, instead the puck found Andrej Meszaros' shin and deflected past Bobrovsky who did not have a chance on the play.

That would cut the Flyers lead to one. It is the second time in the last two games that a shot has deflected off Meszaros into the Flyers goal. The Flyers would get that goal back with one minute left in the second period with a goal by Danny Briere on a nice give and go with Scott Hartnell. The Flyers would head into the third period again with a two goal lead by the score of 3-1.

The Flyers would blow the third period open starting with a shorthanded breakaway goal by Andreas Nodl. He has been great lately playing with a lot of confidence and all his hard work is paying off. Just over a minute later Ville Leino would put a backhand shot past Backstrom from the slot making it 5-1 Flyers.

The next goal would come from an unlikely source. Jody Shelley was sent in on a short breakaway with a pass from Darroll Powe, showed some patience and stick handling skills and deked Backstrom under his right pad to make it 6-1.

That goal brought a smile to Shelley's face and drew a smile from Laviolette as Shelley returned to the bench. Jody Shelley was interviewed after the game by Steve Coates and was asked where he got those moves from ? Shelley said he "kind of blacked out" and read the goalie and just went with it. It kind of made me think of the movie Old School and Will Ferrell's debate scene.

Sergei Bobrovsky was back in net after his two game break and would earn his 12th victory of the season. Bobrovsky stopped 15 of 16 shots, although there were not many shots on goal this game he came up big a few times especially when the game was close.

The Flyers seemed to play down to the Wild tonight at times. It seemed that if they would have given the effort they did against the Habs Monday night, this game would not have taken until the third period to be put away.

The Flyers had a hard time on faceoffs tonight, probably one of their worst nights this season. If you would like to see the faceoff comparison from this game here it is.

The Flyers will go into the Thanksgiving holiday with a three game winning streak, number one record in the league and 84 goals scored, the most in the NHL.

Standout Players
Nodl, Briere, Leino

Happy Thanksgiving and don't gobble up too much turkey !!
