Flyers Turn Up The Power

Power Play goals by Jeff Carter and Danny Briere lead the Flyers past the Hurricanes 2-1 tonight at the Wells Fargo Center.

Jeff Carter opened the scoring in the first minute of the third on a power play that was carried over from the end of the second period.

With Ruutu in the box for slashing at the end of the second period, Carter skated down the right wing snapped a wrist shot which seemed to be misplayed by Cam Ward. The puck hit the top of the thumb on the glove hand bent it back and went into the net for the 1-0 lead, a goal Ward would sure like to have back.

Eleven minutes later as the Flyers were on another power play Briere would give the Flyers some breathing room. With Briere cocked and ready at the side of the net Giroux fired a pass that Briere had to coral on his backhand, he settled it down and quickly stick handled to his fore hand and lifted the puck short side high over Ward's shoulder to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead.

For a second there it looked like Boucher was going to get the Flyers first shut out of the season but it wasn't to be as Tuomo Ruutu beat Boosh just forty seconds after Briere's goal.

Boucher turned in a solid effort tonight keeping the Flyers in it at the end stopping a flurry of shots with less than two minutes in regulation. He improved his career record versus the Canes to 6-1-0 with a 1.58 GAA.

Scary moment in the first two minutes of the second period when Claude Giroux took a shot form Tim Gleason off his left knee. It did not look good as the fans watched him hobble back to the bench and down the tunnel into the locker room. Luckily Giroux did not get seriously hurt and was back on the ice mid way through the second.

The Flyers played well in the first but was not the case in the second when the ice tilted in favor of the Canes. Both teams put together good efforts in the third with the Flyers being a goal better as they picked up their 36th win of the season and 13th since the start of the new year.
