Flyers / Rangers: Must Win Matinée

The Philadelphia Flyers find themselves in unfamiliar territory as they now sit in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Capitals super star Alexander Ovechkin netted an overtime goal Saturday night against the Buffalo Sabres which resulted in the Capitals leap-frogging the Flyers and taking over the top spot in the conference.

The Flyers have been in the top spot most of the season and the last time they were looking up in the standings was on January 8th. Now that reality has set in on this team, and the inconsistent play of late that resulted in some tough losses that now have affected their playoff position.

Washington has three games remaining and will face the Maple Leafs which will prove to be the toughest matchup left as they are still fighting for a playoff spot. The other two games are against the Florida Panthers.

The Flyers have one game in hand on the Caps and will play that in a Sunday Matinée versus the New York Rangers and end the season with the trio of Senators, Sabres, Islanders.

Unlikely Fans

The Philadelphia Flyers fan base just grew as they will pick up fans from the Toronto Maple Leafs nation and from the Carolina Hurricanes today when they face the New York Rangers.

The Rangers are currently holding onto the eight seed with 87 points with Carolina trailing by just one point with 86 and the Leafs at a stalking distance with 84. With the way the Flyers have played their last few games it is tough to be a team that needs their help extending their season.

Of course none of this means a thing to the Flyers, nor are they thinking of these things at this point as they need to take care of their own business.

The Philadelphia Flyers (46-22-10) will take on a possible play-off foe when they host the New York Rangers (41-32-5) at the Wells Fargo Center today at 12:30 PM EST. This will be the last meeting of the regular season, the Flyers are 4-1 versus the Rangers this season.

The Rangers only win versus the Flyers this season was arguably the Flyers worst of the season, a 7-0 shutout . The rest of the way for the Flyers are must wins if they want to take back the top position, that starts today.

The Rangers are desperate to hold onto their playoff position and will bring a solid sixty minute effort. Henrik Lunqvuist will play a major role as he did last meeting recording the 7-0 shutout, speaking of shutouts , Lunqvuist leads the league with eleven.

With the Flyers struggling to score on veterans Mason and Hedberg recently it's not hard to figure out they may have a tougher go at it today. The Rangers have the edge on the power play while the Flyers are the better team on the kill.

The Flyers will have to keep close tabs to Marion Gaborik at all times today especially when the Rangers have the man advantage. Other Rangers to keep an eye on today are Brandon Dubinsky 23 g 52 pts, Ryan Callahan 23 g 47 pts. The Rangers have five players who have 20 or more goals .

Movin On Up

The Flyers have recalled defensman Dany Syvret yesterday, he will wear number 26 and will be available to play versus the Rangers if needed.
