Flyers Return Holmstrom to Phantoms; Briere Expected to Return vs. Devils
The Flyers announced today that they have sent C Ben Holmstrom back to their AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms.
Holmstrom was called up on Tuesday along with Harry Zolnierczyk to step in while Danny Briere and Matt Read recovered from respective upper body injuries. He played 4:57 in last night’s game against Buffalo and registered two penalty minutes.
Holmstrom’s return is big for the Phantoms, as he was named their new captain this season. In eight games, he has recorded four points (all assists) and twenty penalty minutes. He recorded a total of 38 points – 16 goals and 22 assists – in 79 games last year.
This move seems to signify that Danny Briere will indeed be back in the lineup tonight against the New Jersey Devils after missing the last two games. Nothing has been confirmed by the team yet, but CSN’s Tim Panaccio tweeted that Briere is expected to play.
Though he’s missed the last two games, Briere is recording a point-per-game right now – 10 in 10. After a quiet first few games, he’s been picking up speed. He had a four-point night against Winnipeg on October 27th, scoring two goals and assisting on another two.
Briere has been one of the biggest playmakers on this Flyers squad over the last two years.
Last season, he scored 34 goals, coming second only to Jeff Carter (36). He recorded a total of 68 points in the regular season, and had a stellar postseason, scoring seven goals in eleven games.
Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said that Matt Read will need a little longer than Briere to recover from his upper body injury. With Briere likely to return tonight, hopefully Read’s return will be fairly imminent.
