Kovalchuk Out Tonight vs Flyers
The New Jersey Devils will be without their star right winger Ilya Kovalchuk tonight for Game 2 against the Philadelphia Flyers according to Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice, a Devils blog associated with NorthJersey.com.
Devils GM Lou Lamoriello confirmed the news that Kovalchuk would not play. Kovalchuk sustained a lower body injury in the first round of the playoffs and he has been trying to play through it since that time.
The Devils can't be concerned with the absence of Kovalchuk, said Lamoriello.
“At this point, there is no impact in any way whatsoever as far as you have to play with the people you have and you don’t think any different,” Lamoriello said. “Right now, it’s just the people are in the lineup are prepared to play.”
Rookie center Tim Sestito is an option to replace Kovalchuk, said head coach Pete DeBoer. Sestito is in Philadelphia and was on the ice for the Devils’ morning skate.
Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said the Flyers shouldn't play down because the Devils are without their star winger, who scored 37 goals this season. "I don't think we should fall into a trap and think it's going to be easy," he said.
