INJURY UPDATE: Gustafsson To Replace Grossmann
The Flyers will have to try and close out their first round match up against the Penguins without defenseman Nick Grossmann.
Grossmann was lost due to a concussion after being hit by Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin in Game 4. Grossmann is leading the Flyers in blocked shots, an asset he brings to the table that the Flyers had sorely lacked most of the season before acquiring him.
In Grossmann’s place will be the 23-year-old rookie Erik Gustafsson, who has been a top choice for 7th defenseman all season when healthy. He will most likely be paired with Andreas Lilja.
“Gus has done a terrific job for us all year,” head coach Peter Laviolette said this morning.
In 30 games this season, Gustafsson was a plus-12 while racking up a goal and four assists from the blue line.
The other option that the Flyers had, but didn’t go with, was Brandon Manning, who was called up with the Black Aces a few days ago. He had only played in a handful of games this regular season, making the decision to go with Gustafsson an easy one.
