Gameday at Carolina: Flyers Looking For First Win

The Matchup

Philadelphia Flyers (0-2-0) at Carolina Hurricanes (0-0-1)
PNC Arena — Raleigh, N.C.
5:00 p.m. on CSN and 97.5 FM The Fanatic

Setting the Stage

The Flyers do not want to fall to 0-3 to start their season. After the offense has sputtered in its first two showings, questions are being raised on why Philadelphia has just two goals so far this season.

Carolina lost its first game of the season, 3-2, in overtime to the Red Wings. Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe scored to give Carolina a 2-0 lead, but Cam Ward couldn't hold the lead and Detroit stole one in overtime.

Vincent Lecavalier could be a factor in this game. Leading the Flyers with two points (1 goal, 1 assist), he has 78 points in 80 games against the Hurricanes in his career, the most versus any team he's faced.

What to Expect

The Flyers can either wake up offensively or once again run into a talented goaltender who will surely frustrate their chances.

The Masked Men

Philadelphia - Steve Mason will make his second start of the season. He didn't look bad in the Flyers 3-1 loss to Toronto back on Wednesday but all three goals he surrendered were rebound goals. That needs to be corrected.

Montreal - Cam Ward will make his second start of the season for the Hurricanes. He struggled against the Flyers last season with a .886 save percentage and 3.02 G.AA against the Flyers last season.

Keys to the Game

1. Bounce-back For Mason - As stated above, Mason needs to put up a better performance than on Wednesday.

2. Find the Net - It's simple: The Flyers can't win if they can't score. Someone other than Lecavalier needs to show some life on offense.

3. First Win - Most importantly, get that first win. The Flyers are playing their first Metropolitan matchup today, and a win will get them off to the right start in the division.

Quotable

“Guys are working their butts off to create chances. We’ve just got to put it in the net.” - Claude Giroux after Saturday's 4-1 loss to Montreal.
