Flyers send Gostisbehere, Laughton to Lehigh Valley; Morin still in Philly

The Philadelphia Flyers need to get the active roster to 23 by the start of the season.

They're at 26.

The Flyers got to that number when they sent center Scott Laughton and defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere to Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Both, who were top candidates to start the season with the Flyers, will start in Lehigh.

The Flyers also waived veteran Zack Stortini. If he isn't picked up, he will join Laughton and Gostisbehere in Lehigh.

Both of the Flyers prospects are expected to be on the short list of candidates to get a call up when someone goes down. Gostisbehere's fate was set when the Flyers signed Michael Del Zotto in the off season, and Laughton has always been viewed as more than a fourth line center.

One Flyers prospect survived Wednesday's wave of cuts: Samuel Morin. The defenseman, who was the Flyers' top pick in the 2013 draft, is still in contention for a spot on the Flyers starting blue line.

The Flyers also have two options with Morin, and neither include Lehigh. They can give Morin a nine-game tryout - the 10th would make the 2014-15 season count towards his first of a three-year entry level contract - or send the 19-year-old back to Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Morin is on the list of guys looking to stay with the team. Blair Jones, Pierre-Eduoard Bellemare, Jason Akeson, Rob Zepp and Nick Schultz are believed to be in contention with Morin to stay on the roster. Zepp is pretty much a guarantee to be one of those cuts.

The Flyers still have eight defensemen, three goalies and 15 forwards on their roster.
