Flyers Could Be Seeking No. 1 Goalie
It's a known fact that general manager Paul Holmgren is not happy with the goaltending this season from both Ilya Bryzgalov and Sergei Bobrovsky.
According to the source, the Flyers are willing to package Bobrovsky as part of a deal that could include left wing James van Riemsdyk, depending on the goalie.
The Flyers are believed to be eyeing Nikolai Khabibulin of the Edmonton Oilers, Jean-Sebastien Giguere of the Colorado Avalanche and Ondrej Pavelec of the Winnipeg Jets.
The first thing that comes to mind on this report is the fact both Giguere and Khabibulin have one year remaining on their contracts after this season, as well as being on the downside of fabulous careers.
Also, Pavelec is a restircted free agent on July 1, but the Jets are in the middle of a playoff race.
That would make all three "trade candidates" pretty poor returns in a deal that is centered around the 23-year-old Bobrovsky.
It's a pretty known fact that the Flyers front office is very displeased with Bryzgalov, not just for his play but for the constant headaches he has caused the media and public relations with his comments throughout the course of the season.
If the Flyers do in fact want to package a deal around Bobrovsky to look for a new netminder, it says that they are giving up on Bryzgalov way too early in his nine-year, $51-million deal.
Also, if the Flyers are really set on including van Riemsdyk in a deal to acquire a true number one goaltender, it would be easy to think that they could find an option much better than the three TFP's source presented.
Either way, the trade deadline, which concludes on Monday at 3 PM EST, is going to bring about some serious chatter all through tomorrow.
