Flyers Add Austrian Stand-Out Michael Raffl, QMJHL D Maxim Lamarche

UPDATE -- The Flyers have signed both Austrian left winger Michael Raffl as well as 20-year-old QMJHL defenseman Maxin Lamarche.

In a statement on Raffl, who lit up international play for Austria:

“Both (Director of Player Personnel) Dave Brown and myself as well as (European Scout) Ilkka (Sinisalo) saw him at the World Championships and he’s a good player,” said Director of Hockey Operations Chris Pryor. “You noticed him over there. He’s got skill. He thinks the game. He’s a versatile guy and can do a lot of different things.”

Pryor also added that he feels Raffl, 24, is NHL ready and can make an immediate impact for the Flyers.

Lamarche, 20, was also signed today.

“We kind of liked him a little bit last year and then more this year," Pryor said on Lamarche. "You just never know. He gave himself a chance because of his work ethic and he’s getting progressively better.”

ORIGINAL -- Junior hockey league defenseman Maxim Lamarche tweeted yesterday that he was "very proud" to signed with the Flyers.

But in a report by Sam Carchidi, Lamarche jumped the gun a bit on signing his first NHL contract with Philadelphia. The Flyers are heavily pursuing the 20-year-old defenseman but general manager Paul Holmgren told Carchidi that he hasn't been signed yet.

Lamarche is 6'3" and 218 pounds, boasting a right-handed shot from the point. Playing with Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Lamarche scored nine goals and registered 34 assists.

If he signs with the Flyers he is expected to play with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL next season.

Holmgren also said he had "nothing to report" on signing Austrian winger Michael Raffl, though an Austrian newspaper reported that he had agreed to a two-way contract with the team.
