2013 NHL Entry Draft: Flyers Select D Sam Morin

The Philadelphia Flyers have selected defenseman Sam Morin from Rimouski of the QMJHL.

Morin is a big-bodied defenseman that stands tall at 6'6," 202 pounds. He boasts a similar body and attitude to injured blue liner Chris Pronger.

Morin is ranked 32 by the International Scouting Services and has climbed the rankings the past few weeks.

Morin is still considered to be a raw talent, but he has tremendous upside which has made him an attractive pick for a team like the Flyers. He's a good skater for his size, is an intimidating presence on the ice and isn't afraid to get nasty and drop the gloves.

Morin also posses a heavy slapshot, something the Flyers look for on their power play unit and in offensive zone draws.

Morin is at least two years away from the NHL, which isn't a huge surprise. A majority of the time defensemen aren't NHL ready right out of the draft, needing time to develop and get adjusted to the speed of the game.

Morin spoke with Anthony SanFilippo and told the Flyers beat writer that he idolized Pronger growing up. "Just to shake Pronger's hand was a dream come true," Morin said.

The Flyers passed up on two higher ranked defensemen in Nikita Zadorov (8th in the ISS rankings) and Ryan Pulock (14th).

Here are the Top 10 picks in the first round

1. Colorado - C Nathan MacKinnon

2. Florida - C Aleksander Barkov

Notes: Seth Jones shockingly fell to 4th after being a No. 1 pick on a lot of mock draft boards... The Devils traded the 9th pick to the Canucks for G Corey Schneider, who took C Bo Horvat with the pick (Flyers wanted Horvat)... Here is the first round mock draft by Dan and Alicia.
