“Playoffs?! Don’t talk about playoffs! Are you kidding me? Playoffs?! I’m hoping we can win a game, another game!”- Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Mora.
The Philadelphia Flyers are in serious trouble right now and are the verge of being knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Not only are they fighting for their playoff lives but are also with out leading goal scorer Jeff Carter for 3-4 for weeks because of a broken left foot he suffered in the game versus Atlanta. The Flyers are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and only two points up on Boston who is in the eighth and final playoff stop. The Flyers are also only up four points on Atlanta who are currently outside the playoffs in ninth.
I really liked the fight and energy the Flyers showed in the beginning of the game versus Minnesota. The fight and energy was there for the first 40 minutes of the game. They were flying to the puck and creating a ton of chances. Scoring two goals in the first five minutes was exactly what this team needed. The Flyers outshot the Wild 12-3 in the first period and 17-11 in the second period, but the team was only able to muster 6 shots in the third and none in overtime. I thought maybe this team was finally showing some heart and really want to make the playoffs. Then came the third period where they looked nothing like the team that played the first two periods. Though this has been the story for the team all year long, they are very inconsistent. It felt as though they were just trying to hold onto a win and not force anything.
Brian Boucher. I really thought that he would do just fine in net. Well I was wrong. He has struggled since taking over for the injured Michael Leighton. It just seems he as though he isn’t always in position to make some saves. Though, when you have so much traffic in front of the net some goals just aren’t your fault. If only the Flyers could finally have a good goalie. I’m at the point I wish we still had Antero Niittymaki.
I really believe that this team is not going to make the playoffs right now. They are really struggling as a unit and look nothing like the team that was playing so well before the Olympic break. Even when they played against Chicago and won that was a complete game. My predication is that they will not make the playoffs and even if they manage to make it in they will lose in the first round. The schedule doesn’t really help the Flyers at all really with four of their remaining eight games against Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Montreal, and Detroit. Now I hope this doesn’t happen and they can prove me wrong but when you’re without your leading goal scorer and starting goaltender nothing is easy.
That’s all I got for now. Enjoy!
