Flyers vs. Bruins Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers have advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and will face the Boston Bruins. It’s the first time these two teams will meet in the playoffs since 1978.

The Flyers easily handled the New Jersey Devils in round one. The Devils who were the number two seeded team in the Eastern Conference looked more like the seventh seeded team during the series. The Flyers really dominated the matchup and it showed because they won the series in five games.

Flyers goalie Brian Boucher played unbelievably in the first round and better than I ever expected him too. If the Flyers are to be successful in round two Boucher has too continue his strong play in net. Claude Giroux also played a major part in round one often creating chances for teammates every time he touched the puck. Chris Pronger also showed why he is show valuable come playoff time and why the Flyers went out and acquired him in the offseason. Mike Richards also showed why he is the captain of the Flyers with his strong play throughout the series.

The Flyers this round because of injuries will be without Jeff Carter, Simon Gagne, and Ian Laperriere. These are huge losses for the Flyers, but ones I think they can overcome. I believe the biggest loss for this team is Laperriere. He is a huge part of what this team does on the penalty kill and blocks a ton of shots for this team. The line combinations for game one look like this: Carcillo-Richards-Giroux, Leino-Briere-Hartnell, JVR-Ross-Asham, Powe-Betts-Nodl.

Boston meanwhile comes into the series after they beat the Buffalo Sabres in six games. Boston also gets their top center Marc Savard back after he was out for two months with a concussion. Also, Boston’s goaltender Tuuka Rask has played extremely well, only allowing 14 goals in six games vs. Buffalo.

I look for this series to be tightly contested and very physical. I look for the Flyers to win in six games though. I believe this team has showed me a lot lately and are truly playing their best hockey of the season right now. I also believe they are the better team.
