Info For the Flyers 2013 Player Development Camp This Week

On Monday, July 8, the 2013 Flyers Development Camp begins at the SkateZone in Voorhees.

31 Flyers prospects, draft choices and other unsigned invitees are expected to attend.

Via press release:

The camp consists of on-ice sessions from 8:30 – 10 AM and 2:00 – 2:30 PM on Monday and Tuesday (July 8-9), and from 10:00 – 11:30 AM and 2:00 – 2:30 PM on Thursday (July 11). All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, July 10, the camp will shift to Stone Harbor, NJ for the annual Trial On The Isle, a day of conditioning and team activities that begins on the 96th St. beach at 9 AM.  The day includes a team autograph signing for fans at Stone Harbor Elementary School from1:15 to 2:45 and a beach volleyball tournament among the players that fans can watch beginning at 3pm.

A change in the format this season by Ian Laperriere eliminates the end of camp scrimmage, with a focus on drills and instruction.

Some of the graduates from rookie camp include Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Erik Gustafsson, Brandon Manning and Oliver Lauridsen.

5 Players to Watch

Marcel Noebels is the elder statesman this year, appearing at his third camp.

The 2011 draft choice split time between the Phantoms and Titans, scoring 24 goals in 74 combined games. Noebels finished the season playing for his home country of Germany in the World Championships, but went scoreless in three games as Germany failed to advance after the preliminary round.

All six 2013 draft selections are expected to attend, including defensemen Samuel Morin and Robert Hagg. It will be interesting to see how the 11th and 41st picks mesh with the older, seasoned prospects and learn instruction from the Flyers development team.

2012's top choice, center Scott Laughton will be at his second development camp.

Last season, he started with the OHL's Oshawa Generals. When the 2012-13 NHL season began, he was given a five game trial with the big club, but was returned to Oshawa, keeping a year on his entry level deal. After Oshawa's elimination in the OHL playoffs, Laughton joined the Phantoms for their final six games. He will try to make an impact in order to make the Flyers out of training camp this fall.

One goaltender to keep an eye on is 2012 second rounder Anthony Stolarz from Jackson, NJ.

The 6'6 goalie struggled in the beginning of the 2012-13 season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He left the team to join London of the OHL and turned his season around. Stolarz went 13-3-2 with a 2.29 GAA and a .920 save percentage with the Knights.

Most Interesting Player In Camp

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere will also have the eyes of fans and the front office on him.

The 2012 third round selection played at Union College of the ECAC last season, scoring 5 goals and 17 assists in 41 games. Gostisbehere showcased his skills in the NCAA tournament, although a loss to Quinnipiac ended Union's run one game short of the Frozen Four.

Dark Horse to Make the Flyers

Nick Cousins will be the one to watch. The third round pick in 2011 put up 103 points for Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds of the OHL.

Cousins was the league's runner up in assists, putting up 76. The controversial winger is a wild card to make the Flyers out of training camp, but will likely be assigned to the Phantoms, where he finished the 2013 season.
