The Flyers are still practicing daily (Twitter) while waiting for their next opponents. A tough opponent would be the New York Rangers. However, to be the best you have to beat the best, and a Flyers-Rangers series sure would be a good one (Hockey Buzz).
Injured defenseman Andrej Meszaros returned to practice today, but he was wearing a no-contact jersey (The Inquirer). Nicklas Grossmann was also there wearing the no-contact jerseys. Whether they can or cannot take hits, they’re still making progress and that’s what matters (CSNPhilly). Talbot spoke with the media about something interesting after practice. He said he’d like to coach someday (Daily News).
At least with the injuries, the Flyers still have plenty of players who can fill in those roles, just like they’ve done all year. Their focus on defense bodes well for the playoff chances (SBNation). This amount of depth came from the work of Paul Holmgren, who completely remodeled the team over the past summer. While he did tremendously well, he was snubbed and wasn’t even named a finalist for the ‘GM of the Year’ award (TCL Flyers).
The Flyers were the odd ones out in the East, not going to a Game 7 vs their first opponents. It’s a battle of the Game 7’s now for the NHL to finish the first round (Orange and Black Pack):
The Western Conference are of course finished all their games and the matchups are set. There are no games scheduled yet, however.
The East is going to be intense for tonight and tomorrow. The Bruins and Capitals will face off in Boston to determine who advances (NHL.com). The game is a defining moment for Caps’ forward Alex Ovechkin, who isn’t known to come up big in big games (RLD Hockey). The Rangers and Senators will play tomorrow, as will the Devils and Panthers (NHL.com). For the Rangers, they just want to play, well, Rangers Hockey and pick up a win (RLD Hockey).
