One word can easily describe the Flyers performance this past weekend: awful.
It started on Saturday when they fell to the Rangers by a score of 5-2 (TCLFlyers). Bobrovsky was between the pipes again, due to Ilya Bryzgalov having a lingering virus. Bryzgalov himself isn’t exactly sure what the problem is (CSNPhilly).
Even though they had their top line back together (TCLFlyers), the Flyers just could not stop the Rangers loaded powerplay. Positioning by the Flyers was also a big reason they lost by a wide margin (TCLFlyers). After the game, Kimmo Timonen called out his teammates for lack of effort (CSNPhilly), and he had every right to do so (The Hockey Guys). Laviolette says he trusts Timonen’s judgement as well (@BroadStBull).
Sunday night, positioning and special teams was once again a killer for the Flyers, as they fell 4-3 to the Detroit Red Wings (TCL Wings).
The two games just showed more reason for the Flyers need to get a defenseman prior to the deadline. If not, they’ll continue to fall lower and lower on various NHL power rankings (RLD Hockey). A move is really expected now, as their were scouts and GMs from several teams in Philadelphia on Saturday (TCLFlyers). However, a single defenseman may not be able to save the Flyers (TCLFlyers). What is their current state, and what are some very logical options (The Hockey Guys)?
Max Talbot thinks, however, that once the playoffs start, the regular season is completely in the past (Philly.com). He’s right, but the Flyers are 1-7 against top guns New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. That is a huge task, even though everyone is 0-0 when it comes playoff time.
The losses are really affecting the Flyers in the division standings...
The Rangers continue to dominate, winning three in a row. Yesterday, they took down the Capitals, 3-2 (Washington Times).
The Penguins have been on the Flyers’ rear end for a while now, and they have finally caught up. In an 8-5 victory vs the Jets (Post-Gazette) and a 4-2 win vs the Lightning (NHL.com) this past weekend, Evgeni Malkin came up huge with seven total points in both games. He’s continuing to look like a deserving Hart Trophy winner (RLD Hockey).
While the Rangers and Penguins are surging, the Islanders playoff hopes continue to get smaller. They did beat the Kings 2-1 in overtime on Saturday (TCL Isles), but got thumped 4-1 by the Panthers (TCL Isles) yesterday.
