Flyers Players Abroad

With the NHL lockout almost a month old and with regular season games cancelled through October 24th, more and more players are heading overseas. Nine of those players have a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Thirteen players under contract with the Flyers are eligible to play with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms.  Here’s a complete list of where members of the Flyers have decided to play until the lockout ends:

  • Marc-Andre Bourdon (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Danny Briere (Eisbaren Berlin; DEL)
  • Ilya Bryzgalov (CSKA Moscow; KHL)
  • Sean Couturier (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Ruslan Fedotenko (HC Donbass; KHL)
  • Matt Ford (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Claude Giroux (Eisbaren Berlin; DEL)
  • Nicklas Grossmann (Södertälje SK; Allsvenskan)
  • Erik Gustafsson (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Ben Holmstrom (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Oliver Lauridsen (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Brandon Manning (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Tye McGinn (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Matt Read (Södertälje SK; Allsvenskan)
  • Zac Rinaldo (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Brayden Schenn (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Tom Sestito (Sheffield Steelers; EIHL)
  • Wayne Simmonds (Eispiraten Crimmitschau; 2nd Bundesliga) *
  • Danny Syvret (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Jakub Voracek (HC Lev Praha; KHL)
  • Eric Wellwood (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)
  • Harry Zolnierczyk (Adirondack Phantoms; AHL)

A few Flyers have landed in Russia.  In the Kontinental Hockey League, Ilya Bryzgalov has signed with CSKA Moscow.  Also in the KHL is Ruslan Fedotenko playing for HC Donbass as is Jakub Voracek. However, while playing for HC Lev Praha, Voracek suffered a knee injury in the third period of Saturday’s game against SKA St. Petersburg.  The injury is expected to keep him out for a month and could result in the termination of his contract with Lev Praha.

Three of the Flyers have head to Germany.  Claude Giroux and Danny Briere will be teammates on Eisbaren Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).  Meanwhile, Wayne Simmonds has been with Eispiraten Crimmitschau of the 2nd Bundesliga.  He recently pounded on Ralf Rinke of the Fischtown Pinguins in a regular season match-up.

Young guns like Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn, who impressed in the NHL last year, are on the Adirondack Phantoms. They’ll join players like Eric Wellwood and Ben Holmstrom who spent the majority of the 2011-12 season with the team.

Check back often for updates to this list.  It will be updated as soon as players decide where they will be spending their time until the lockout is over.
