Flying again?

The Philadelphia Flyers have a three-game winning streak. Oh happy days. Following their 4-1 thrashing by the Florida Panthers at home, the Flyers got their winning ways started in Tampa Bay defeating the Lightning 5-2, then shot up the coast and beat Carolina 4-3, in a shootout and just last night, got the best of the Islanders, 2-1. Are the Flyers back? Of course not. In fact, I don’t think this team will make the playoffs, or think they deserve too. They deserved the win in Tampa, they had a lack-luster second period and played horrible, but they were playing the Lightning – a real contender puts the Flyers away. Then two days later, they couldn’t even hold on to ...

Philadelphia Flyers: the gift of giving

General Manager Paul Holmgren Is there a quick remedy to fix this Flyers team? Of course not. But while Philadelphia continues to struggle, it leaves us with two glaring questions. One; how did this happen to a team that was favored to win the Stanley Cup? And two; how can it be fixed? While we can point fingers, explain how poor the on-ice play has been and complain about the leadership, I will tell you how these problems can be fixed. Trades. Blunt, but I’m being honest. The excuses from the management first started with the coach. After a three-game skid, John Stevens was fired for Peter Laviolette. Following the change, they still lost. The next excuse; it takes ti...

Better?

No internet connection in a $200+ room/night at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City – what’s up with that? Either way, he is pretty cool game story/evaluation story on the Flyboys, enjoy. Wondering which team will show up – it had better be a hungrier team than we saw on Tuesday in Pittsburgh. I would be embarrassed after that performance – not to mention this team has lost 11 of their last 14 games. Captain Mike Richards recently called out his boys, questioning their heart. But this is Pittsburgh, and recently – the Penguins have simply owned the Flyers, you would think the Flyers should come out flying – but I’ve seen this team one too many times play the Mr. ...

Dissecting the underachieving Flyers

Call it underperforming, call it overrated – whatever you may call it, right now, the Philadelphia Flyers are pathetic. The Flyers currently sit at 15-16-2 and have compiled 32 points in the East — only three teams in the league have fewer than 15 wins. After their 6-1 waxing from the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday night in Mellon Area and 3-2 overtime loss to the Pens on Thursday, the Flyers have fallen 17 points behind Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference standings. But I thought this team was slated to win the East? Weren’t they picked to win the Cup by so many? What happened? I’ll tell you why: locker room problems, childish relationships on and off ...

Flyers Fans React - #Three

This is the third edition of my weekly blog called ‘Flyers Fans React,’ and with us we have Glenn Karabin. Glenn is a complete sport-freak who was born in Philadelphia and has been in the Air Force for 17 years. He was assigned to the Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, Florida for 16 years where he was a Communications and Navigations System Technicians on MH-53M helicopters (repaired radios, radar, GPS, etc). While at Hurlburt Field, Glenn deployed many times. In November 2008, Glenn was assigned to Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, and will be there till 2012. Simply put, Glenn loves the Flyers, Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers to death. DL - Was the right decisi...

Flyers Fans React - 2

(EDITIOR’S NOTE: Interview was done before the firing of John Stevens) This is the second edition of my weekly blog called ‘Flyers Fans React,’ and with us we have Jodie Smola. Jodie is a huge hockey fan and if she could, would pretty much even watch hockey being played on a frozen pond. She grew up in the Philly area and bleeds Orange-and-Black, even though she is currently displaced and in Caps territory at the moment. She loves going to games and taking photos. It’s time for Jodie to voice her opinion. DL - Should John Stevens be the head coach of the Flyers? JS - That's a dangerous question. I'm aware of the fire John Stevens sentiment. I think he was a ...

Fire in Philly

4:57 p.m. – E-mail from my friend and colleague Anthony Curatolo. SUBJECT: “Get On It” BODY: “STEVENS CANNED…OFFICIAL” 4:58-5:25 p.m. – Scour the internet, make calls, place some texts and try to gather my thoughts. Could it be? Stevens really fired? Already? I know they’ve been horrible but I thought they played at least respectable last night. Then I remember this was a team picked to win the Stanley Cup. Not play ‘respectable.’ 5:25-5:31 p.m. – Log onto TSN.ca. ‘FIRED IN PHILLY’ 5:31 p.m. – It’s official. Stevens out the door and sources inform me that Peter Laviolette is the new man in Philly. 5:32 – 6:10 p.m. - I break ...

Joacim Eriksson Interview

Meet Joacim Eriksson, the Flyers top goalie prospect. Drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 7th round (196th overall) in 2008, Joacim Eriksson is currently playing in the Allsvenskan League for Leksands IF. Ed “The Eagle” Belfour and Johan Hedberg have also suited up for Leksands IF. For my North American friends, Allsvenskan is the second-highest level professional hockey league in Sweden, directly under the Swedish Elite League (SEL). Coming out of the draft at age 18, Eriksson posted a 1.99 goals-against average with a .930 save percentage in 33 games for team Brynäs in the SuperElit under-20 league. Eriksson was the second ranked goaltender behind Jacob Markst...

The ultimate Philadelphia Flyers breakdown

Some of stats I dug for about each player, my thoughts on the 22 of them, followed by what must change in Orange-and-Black land, before it becomes Black-and-Blue land. ASHAM: Recorded a career-high three game goal scoring streak earlier in the season and has done an awesome job of playing a more disciplined brand of hockey. Asham received a two minute instigator, five-minute fighting major and 10-minute misconduct for stepping in and fighting Colby – Coward - Armstrong after his cheap hit on JVR – outside of those 17 minutes, Asham has only 25 penalty minutes and that’s great for the Flyers. Asham has shown flashes of brilliance playing all over the line-up this year. H...

Flyers Fans React

This is the first edition of my weekly blog called 'Flyers Fans React'. Each week I will feature a Flyers fan and ask them some questions about the Orange-and-Black. Our first guest is is Don Sabara. Mr. Sabara has been a Flyers fan since the '85-'86 season and has rarely missed a game since the '90-'91 season. DL - The Flyers were on a stretch, winning seven of eight games, only to lose their next three in a row earlier this week - what must the Flyers do to win at a more consistent basis? DS - I think the team being decimated by injuries is the biggest factor right now. But losing Blair Betts is a huge piece of the puzzle. His ability to win the face-off really sets the t...
