Flyers Fans React - pt. seven

For today’s Flyers Fans React, we are joined by Flyers blogger David Strehle. David has been a hardcore hockey fan since mid-70s and ardent supporter of the Orange-&-Black since '79. He’s seen the Flyers reach the Finals four times but has yet to see Philadelphia win Lord Stanley's coveted chalice. David currently blog’s about the Flyers at Puckdrop.ca and all things NHL at CrashtheCrease.com. DL – Entering the Olympic break on a four-game winning streak, how comfortable are you with the Flyers coming out of the break? DS - I'm actually feeling pretty good about the team for when they come back after the break. I think any question marks in goal have been answered by Michael...

Ray Emery - KO'd

Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren has informed the Philadelphia media that goaltender Ray Emery has been ‘shut down’ for the next three weeks. Emery has been out of action since his 3-0 shutout victory in Calgary. The UFA to-be has had injury problems are season long and will try to attempt to play following the Olympic break. After recently taking an MRI on the hip, the news comes delayed after the Dr.’s and team management couldn’t come on a decision – surgery or rest. The team has decided on the latter. “Based on what the doctors have told us, we’re just going to shut Ray down here for three weeks and give him some time to rehabilitate the hip, and then we’ll ...

Flyers Acquire Leino

The Philadelphia Flyers have traded Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and a fifth-round pick in 2011 to the Detroit Red Wings for leftwing Ville Leino. Leino, 27, was a free-agent signing by the Wings following the 2008 season. His first season playing professional hockey in the AHL, Leino recorded 46 points in 57 games for the Grand Rapids. Following the completion of his season, Leino was called-up by Detroit and succeeded instantly. He scored five goals and added four assists in 13 games, including a high-light reel goal on his first ever NHL shift. This season has been a sophomore slump to say the least. The Finnish born winger has only seven points in 42 games and is a minus-10. From ...

Flyers Fans React - pt. six

For today’s Flyers Fans React, we are joined by Flyers blogger Matt Riffe. Riffe has been a passionate Flyers fan since he was born. He grew up on the Broad Street Bullies style of play, he was able to watch the prime of the Legion of Doom, the disaster of the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals, and the bitter disappointment of the 2004 Flyers. Currently a start-up blogger at Hendrickshockey.com, Matt hopes to see a Stanley Cup very soon. DL – Have the Philadelphia Flyers turned a corner? Will we see the Flyers team that Beat Calgary 3-0 or the team that blew a third period lead against Atlanta, the rest of the way? MF – Undoubtedly, the former. Due to a new coach in Peter Laviole...

The Philadelphia Flyers - Moving Forward

The 2010 campaign for the Philadelphia Flyers has been a season of inconsistency. One night the Orange-and-Black look like a Stanley Cup contender, the next – not even like a playoff contender. Is there a real answer as to why this happens? Why there seems to be something lacking in their game? Or why there is always a mid-game lay-off? Well, I’m sorry – but you’re not going to find that exact answer here but I will try my best. Last night the Flyers easily handled the lifeless Flames, 3-0 in Alberta. It was a total team effort and a complete game. Something Flyers fans would love to see more of. But, tomorrow night in Edmonton could be a different story (It better not be, th...

Flyers interested in acquiring Thrashers’ Ilya Kovalchuk?

According to Denis Potvin on XM radio Satellite this morning, the Philadelphia Flyers are very interested in acquiring Altanta Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk. Tim Panaccio of CSNPHilly also reported yesterday that Paul Homgren is listening to what Atlanta has to say about their Russian sniper. Holmgren, who is more and more looking for a trade partner, said: "We might want to still do something on defense and forward, but not in goal." CSNPhilly According to an undisclosed source, Waddell and Holgren met last week to discuss about trade possibilities. Waddell also scouted the Flyers himself on Saturday during the Isles game, but did not meet with Holmgren, the source added. The T...

Got A Little Captain in Us?

“Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of our Lives.” Flip-Cup, Beer Pong, Keg Stands — Welcome to Philadelphia. Following the Flyers 5-3 loss to Washington, Captain Mike Richards had another incident with the Flyers’ media following the game. The incident grew so heated that Peter Laviolette had to step behind Richards and the writer in the locker room. This isn’t the first time Richards had an incident with the stories written about himself and his crew. And by ‘crew’ I mean his friend crew; the younger boys that live in center city. Richards went about a month without talking to the media because of stories written in the local papers about Joffre...

Keeping It In The Family...Flyers Style

For today's special Winter Classic Flyers Fans React we have Anna Piaia participating along with her Father, Bernie. "My dad has been a fan since high school, around 1970-71. "Let me put it to you this way," he says. "Doug Favel was goalie." He grew up in upstate PA, so Flyers games were all he could get. That, and he never really liked the New York teams, which were also popular up there. He ended up going to school at Temple, so he was able to follow the team better. He's also a big Bernie Parent fan, which I think is cute because they're both named Bernie and they both players goalie (my dad was on a street hockey team in college). Hockey's always been a part of my life. I had b...

A Winter Classic

BOSTON -- It may have taken extra-innings, but the Boston Bruins put the Philadelphia Flyers away with a walk-off when it counted most. And rightfully so. It was a picture-perfect ending to a script that couldn’t have been written any better. Marco Sturm hit a walk-off homerun 1:57 into the overtime period and Tim Thomas stood on his head for much of the game as the Bruins were able to outlast the Flyers 2-1 in the 2010 NHL Winter Classic, Friday night at Fenway Park. Thomas, who was named to the USA Men’s Olympic Team for the 2010 Winter Olympics following the game, made some spectacular saves through-out the game and finished with 24. The loss snapped Philadelphi...

Flyers Fans React - four

BOSTON -- For the fourth edition of Flyers Fans react, with us we have Shane Davis. Shane became the Flyers fan that he is today the day Darryl Sittler was traded to the Flyers. Since then he has been a die-hard fan stuck in the Mecca of Canadian hockey, Toronto and followed them through thick-and-thin . DL – Before this last week, in your opinion, why is has team struggling so much? SD - This is a tough question because I am not in the dressing room and don’t know if things are stable there or not. I can only comment on what I see on the ice. Discipline has always been something that hurts the Flyers. They take too many dumb penalties and kill their momentum. In co...
