Game Day:Flyers / Leafs

The Philadelphia Flyers (41-19-6) will head to Toronto tonight to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs (29-28.10) at the Air Canada Centre at 7:00 pm. The Flyers snapped their four game losing streak on Tuesday with a 4-1 versus the speedy Edmonton Oilers. Although it was a much needed win, as a team the Flyers were far from happy with their effort. They played a great first period scoring two goals off of seventeen shots and started to look like they have found their game. Not so, they would play a horrible second period and only managed a total of ten shots in the second and third periods combined. The Leafs are coming off a 4-3 OT loss in NY to the Islanders on Tuesday night and ...

Flyers End Streak, But Continue Third Period Woes

Photo Credit: AP Photo The Philadelphia Flyers ended their four game losing streak Tuesday night on home ice against the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-1 victory. It was nice to see the Flyers get back to their winning ways, but tonight's victory wasn't exactly one to be particularly proud of. It was obvious that tonight's game was expected to be an important one for the Flyers. After the disaster that occurred on Sunday afternoon, everyone was looking to see how the team would respond. Peter Laviolette gave the guys a complete day off. He just wanted them to get away from the rink and away from each other for the day. The idea sounded like a perfect one. The first period was one of th...

Game Day: Flyers / Oilers

With the Philadelphia Flyers (40-19-6) currently on a four game losing streak and playing their worst hockey of the season, they get a chance to right the ship tonight when they host arguably the worst team in the league, the Edmonton Oilers (23-35-8). Under normal circumstances this type of game is a sure win, but with the Flyers lack luster play of late, a loss tonight and they could find themselves with company at the top of the Eastern Conference. Matchup This is the first and only matchup of the season between these two teams. In their only meeting last season the Oilers pulled off a last second 1-0 win turning away 33 Flyer shots in the process. The Flyers are 28-7-8 a...

Shot Selection Study Vs. NYR

The Philadelphia Flyers continued their losing ways on Sunday by falling to the New York Rangers, 7-0. The Flyers are now 4-1 on the season against the Broadway Blue shirts and are in the midst of a 4-game losing streak, the longest such streak of the year. The Flyers have been outscored 19-6 during that span and have allowed at least 3 goals in their last six consecutive games. Coming off of a shaky February and a winless beginning to March, many are beginning to wonder what has happened to this team. Not only are they not scoring goals, but they’re also giving up a ton of goals. Bob has not looked great as of late and has gone 1-3-1 in his last five games. Boucher is now 4-3 in hi...

Flyers Massacred in Manhattan, 7-0

With a three game losing streak weighing heavy on their shoulders, the Philadelphia Flyers took the ice in Manhattan. For the team, it seemed that their longtime rivals the New York Rangers would help cure their woes. After all, the Flyers entered the game with a 4-0-0 record against the blueshirts. There was no cure. Philadelphia was beaten in every facet of the game on Sunday, and that’s putting it mildly. The Rangers tallied early and often in a 7-0 obliteration of the Flyers, and in the process they added more weight to the team’s burden. For the Flyers, the problems that have plagued them in their losing streak appeared again on Sunday. Not only did the problems appea...

Flyers/Rangers Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers are now looking to end a three game losing streak. That hasn't been said since back in October, and the Flyers have not lost more than three games in a row all season. The concerning part is not necessarily the number of losses. It is the way the losses have occurred. Blown leads and weak third periods are never going to go over well. The New York Rangers are an opponent similar to the Buffalo Sabres in a sense that they are trying to win games simply to make the playoffs. They currently sit at 7th in the east, but just one loss can easily change their position, so you can bet that they will come ready to play today. Playing on back to back days could be the b...

The Philadelphia Flyers: Quick Strike Goals Study

The Philadelphia Flyers fell to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon in disappointing fashion. The Flyers scored two goals in the first period that left the Philadelphia faithful fairly confident; They had beaten Buffalo two previous times this season and had done so by out scoring the Sabres 11-5. Buffalo superstar Ryan Miller had allowed at least 5 goals in each of the two previous match-ups and Saturday looked to be no different. In the second period, the Flyers would lose control of the game by allowing 3 unanswered Buffalo goals in a span of 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Philadelphia would tie the game before the end of the second, but would allow a goal in the third that ultimately ...

Flyers Blow Another Lead; Lose To Buffalo 5-3

Photo Credit: AP Photo The Philadelphia Flyers have lost three games in a row for just the second time this season. Today's loss was especially disappointing due to the way that the team lost. It was another case of not playing a full 60 minutes and blowing a lead. Another frustrating third period also came into play. The lead in the East is slipping, and the Flyers are going to have to get things together. Special teams play was the story of the first period. The Flyers failed to convert on their first power play of the game and also took a penalty while on the man advantage. The Flyers then took another penalty to give the Sabres a two man advantage. The 5 on 3 was killed off tha...

Preview: Flyers Vs. Sabres

Photo Credit: AP Photo The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off back to back losses for the first time since December. It is unfamiliar territory for the team and for fans. It's hard to put it into perspective since a two game losing streak is nothing compared to a five game slump that could hit a team. At the same time, the Flyers haven't won more than two games in a row since early February. While the team has not been horrible, they have struggled to finish games lately and have almost consistently blown third period leads. The Buffalo Sabres are one of the bubble teams in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They are currently on the outside looking in, but that only means that t...

Flyers Fail To Bag Leafs, Lose 3-2

The Philadelphia Flyers entered tonight's game a bit short handed as they were with out the services of Jeff Carter Darrol Powe and Dan Carcillo. With the Flyers one of the deeper teams in the league plugged in Nikolay Zherdev and rookie call up Ben Holmstrom, who made his NHL debut as Jeff Carter was a late scratch with the Flu. Holmstrom had been called up earlier in the day would have a good first period helping kill off some of the four Leaf power plays surrendered in the period. He was paired with Blair Betts on those kills and also with Betts and Shelley on the fourth line. The Flyers needed to jump out to a quick start and did maybe to quick as Ville Leino raced down the i...
